In NSW it is illegal for anyone but a qualified electrician to do any domestic wiring or house rewiring. Even if the work has been done to standard it will not pass certification which is bad news especially if you need to sell the property. It makes sense for safety to hire a qualified electrician to carry out all your household wiring. You also risk your personal safety and the safety of your family and friends.

•  If it is more that 5 years since one has been done
•  If you are concerned about how any of the equipment may have been installed

If you’re experiencing, flickering lights, power surges, frequent outages, or have noticed burn markings on your electrical outlets or switchboard it’s likely that a fault has occurred in your switchboard, and / or your homes electrical wiring. In which case you should call your expert electrician immediately to conduct an electrical safety inspection. And ask about upgrading your switchboard to avoid household and electrical damage, and to prevent safety hazards.  

Another reason for power surges and flickering electricity, is that your home may have outgrown the electrical capacity of your old switchboard. In this case, you may need to upgrade your switchboard to one that can divert a larger current. Or have another electrical circuit added or upgraded onto your existing switchboard. You shouldn’t have to unplug the toaster to use your kettle!

Arcing– The electricity flowing through your property, has an electromagnetic field and you don’t even realise this exists. However, when this build-up becomes excessive, that weakens the wiring, it melts and results in arcing, which is the crackling, hissing & buzzing sound you can sometimes hear in wires.

Short Circuits– Short circuits are caused when any neutral wire comes in contact with any live wire. In case this happens, the fuse blows and this disconnects the electrical supply in the circuit. However, if for some reason, this doesn’t occur, the electrical current continues to flow through the wire and it will melt with the heat.

Power overloads– This is another common problem that can result in melted wires. Every wiring installation is designed to carry a certain load. If your property has wiring that’s over 20 years old, it won’t be able to bear the load that modern day electrical appliances demand. If you happen to operate many of these simultaneously, that can lead to an overload, which will cause the wiring to melt.

A safety switch monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit and cuts power in milliseconds if it detects a fault — protecting you from electric shock. They are a legal requirement in NSW for new installations and are strongly recommended for all existing homes.

There are three main types:

• Switchboard-mounted — protects an entire circuit and every appliance on it
• Powerpoint safety switches — plug in and protect any device connected to that outlet; recommended in bathrooms, laundries, and outdoor areas
• Portable safety switches — used with power tools outside; plugs between the tool and the outlet
